The mind of an addict operates on a different frequency, often trapped in a cycle of false hope and selective memory. Each time we consider using again, we mistakenly believe that this time will yield a different outcome, fixating only on the fleeting euphoria we once experienced.
The painful consequences and the havoc we wreak on our lives and the lives of others fade from our minds. Recovery begins when we start to "think things through," recognizing that those fleeting "good times" inevitably lead to the same devastating results.
I learned this the hard way, losing everything and becoming homeless. Embracing this clear-eyed perspective gives me a fighting chance to stay clean and sober, allowing me to confront the reality of my addiction rather than the distorted memories that once guided my decisions.
